Okasha Center for Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine holds the Second World Conference on Psychological Eating Disorders

Anwar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hospitals, Prof. Tariq Youssef, Executive Director of University Hospitals, on Thursday morning, October 26, opened the activities of the Second World Conference on Psychological Eating Disorders, entitled “Bridging the Gap between Eating Disorders and Concurrent Psychological and Organic Diseases.” "Which was organized by the Okasha Psychiatric Center at Al-Demerdash Hospital.

This is in the presence of Prof. Maha Al-Sayed, Professor of Psychiatry and former Director of the Dr. Ahmed Okasha Center and Chairman of the Conference, Prof. Nahla Al-Sayed, Head of the Dr. Ahmed Okasha Center for Psychiatry, Prof. Nevin Al-Nahhas, Head of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry, Prof. . Mumtaz Abdel Wahab, Professor of Medicine at Cairo University, Prof. Heba Essawy, Professor of Psychiatry, Head of the Department of Psychiatric Eating Disorders and General Secretary of the Conference, Prof. Afaf Hamed, General Advisor of the Conference, and a group of faculty staff in the Department

During the conference, a group of specialists, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapeutic nutritionists, discussed the latest methods of diagnosis and early detection of conditions in childhood and adolescence, and the latest scientific papers on treatment methods until we reach high rates of recovery from these disorders.

One of the diseases discussed at the conference was anorexia nervosa, also known as anorexia, which is a serious eating disorder, and its prevalence in children and adolescents may reach 5%, where the person abstains from eating because he is convinced that he is obese even though he actually suffers from weight loss or even thinness. These patients suffer from a distorted image of their bodies

The sessions of the new conference also included bulimia nervosa, which is considered a widespread disorder affecting up to 10% of adults, in which a person eats a lot of food very quickly and then tries to get rid of it, whether by intentional vomiting, use of laxatives, or excessive exercise. All this to try to prevent weight gain.

The conference also addressed the topic of emotional eating and its relationship to obesity, and a session was also held on selective eating in childhood and its negative effects on physical growth and its damage to children’s mental health and academic skills.

On the sidelines of the conference, a public symposium was held at the Psychiatry Center in the evening of the same day, aiming to raise awareness about the dangers of eating disorders, whether health or psychological. The symposium will be hosted by media personality Sally Fouad, artist Nada Rahmi, and some survivors of eating disorders to tell their stories in order to raise health awareness and These psychological disorders, in fact, affect not only the patient but also the family as well as society
