The President of Ain Shams University meets with the coalition of British universities participating in the Glasgow Climate Summit

Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, held a meeting with Stephen David, Vice President of the Climate Group at Cambridge University, Alyssa Gilbert, Deputy Director of the British Universities Network for the Climate Summit and Director of Policy and Application at the Grantham Climate Institute at Imperial College London, and Dr. Helen Adam, Professor of Climate Change at King’s College London, to discuss the issue of climate change and the role of higher education institutions in adopting the issue and aspects of contributions in this field, in the role of Egypt’s preparations to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference during the month of November of this year. The previous set up in the United Kingdom is an educational alliance consisting of 80 universities in the United Kingdom, with the aim of providing state institutions with the results of scientific research to aid in planning.

This came during the visit of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, UK; The talk also touched on the Egyptian government's plan to form a university alliance to serve to raise awareness about climate change, in addition to encouraging scientific research in this field. The alliance is currently made up of 27 Egyptian universities.

It was agreed to make preparatory arrangements for coordination between the university alliance in the United Kingdom and the Egyptian to transfer expertise and to benefit from the experience through joint research between the two sides.

Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, confirmed the importance of starting each Egyptian university on its own, so that it becomes an example for consolidating community cooperation to confront the issue of climate change, pointing to the guidance of Prof. Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for Universities, during the meeting of the Supreme Council of Universities, with each university reviewing its research and academic efforts and presenting its experiences in climate change, based on the university’s original role in community service and environmental development.

Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini indicated that Ain Shams University launched an initiative to provide a training program to prepare climate ambassadors as part of the activities adopted by the Million Youth Volunteer Initiative for Climate Adaptation, launched by the Faculty of Environmental Studies at Ain Shams University.

It is worth noting that Ain Shams University has established the Green Transformation Unit with the aim of managing solid waste in an integrated manner, in addition to the university's endeavor to gradually transition to relying on solar energy.

Dr. Rasha Kamal, Cultural Attaché in the United Kingdom, stressed the importance of the role of the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Office in strengthening academic and research relations between Egyptian and British universities in various fields, in accordance with the academic and research strategies adopted by the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
