The Third International Conference of the Faculty of Archeology at Ain Shams University, held in cooperation with the Egyptian Maritime Salon and the Honor-Frost Foundation, came out under the title: “Rooting Egyptian Maritime Heritage: Traditions of Building and Equipping Ships through History” over the course of October 29-30, 2023, concluded with a number of recommendations, which were Announced during the closing session of the conference, which was held under the chairmanship of Prof. Hossam Tantawi, Dean of the Faculty, and President of the Conference, in the presence of Prof. Ahmed Al-Shawki, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Postgraduate Studies and Research and Conference Rapporteur, and Dr. Mohamed Mostafa, an expert in sunken antiquities at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
The conference recommended the necessity of moving forward towards implementing the research project to consolidate the sciences of the Egyptian maritime heritage in the word of archeology, Ain Shams University, in cooperation with the concerned authorities, while supporting further studies and documentary research with various archaeological sources to monitor the shapes and names of ships throughout the ages, and supporting research centers for specialists in archaeological sciences. Navigation and Marine Engineering to conduct further laboratory and experimental tests to determine accurate results for calculating the balance and speed of ships throughout the ages.
The conference also recommended organizing field visits on the sidelines of the next conference to sites that serve maritime heritage, focusing on documenting and inventorying shipbuilding methods in the modern era while linking them to ancient methods and traditions that were followed in this field, and continuing to hold a conference on consolidating the Egyptian maritime heritage periodically in cooperation with The Marine Salon and the competent authorities.
It was also recommended to hold workshops that simulate the manufacture of shipbuilding and shipbuilding tools to shed light on the technology followed by the ancient Egyptian and the development and enhancement it achieved in subsequent eras until the modern era, and to shed light on the importance of analytical studies in the field of archeology and heritage to extract more information and terminology about our marine heritage, and paying attention to holding periodic scientific meetings to connect specialists in the field of marine heritage sciences and reaching joint research projects that serve all parties.
