Prof. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of Ain Shams University, inaugurated the activities of the forty-third annual conference of the Faculty of Medicine, at Ain Shams University, entitled "How Artificial Intelligence Will Change the Shape of Health Care", in the presence of Prof. Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, Advisor to the President of the Republic for Health Affairs, and Major General Bahaa El-Din Zaidan, President of the Unified Procurement Authority, Prof. Abdel-Fattah Saoud, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, Prof. Ayman Saleh, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, where they were received by Prof. Ali Al-Anwar, Dean Faculty of Medicine and President of the Conference.
The conference was opened by Professor Christopher Ellison, President of the American Faculty of Surgeons, the Vice Deans of the Faculty of Medicine, directors of university hospitals, and a group of faculty staff and specialists.
The conference, which takes place from February 25 to March 3, 2023, coincides with the Faculty of Medicine’s celebration of the Diamond Jubilee, and the 75th anniversary of its establishment.
In his speech, Prof. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of Ain Shams University, welcomed the guests, expressing thanks to everyone who contributed to the progress of the university, and to all those in charge of the conference and the participants.
He praised the choice of the title of the conference, "Artificial Intelligence", which is now interfering in all fields, stressing that it will not replace the doctor, but will be an auxiliary factor for him in diagnosis, treatment, management, and others.
He added that the conference agenda is rich and varied, expressing his happiness at his participation in the faculty conference, and encouraging all departments to integrate their conference into Ain Shams Scientific Medicine Week.
He also talked about Ain Shams National University, which will include a package of attractive new programs based on the overlap of disciplines. He also talked about Ain Shams Medical City, which is scheduled to be completed by 2024, and that it is an integrated medical project that will represent an addition to the health system in Egypt.
In his speech, Prof. Mohamed Awad Taj El-Din, Advisor to the President of the Republic for Health Affairs and former Minister of Health, affirmed that the Faculty of Medicine, at Ain Shams University, is one of the best medical schools in the world, and all faculty staff should feel proud of belonging to it.
His Excellency praised the distinguished performance of Prof. Mahmoud El-Meteini during his presidency of the university, which caused a major breakthrough at the level of the university as a whole. He also praised the role played by the university hospitals during the Corona pandemic.
In the conclusion of his speech, Prof. Mohamed Awad Taj El-Din confirmed his belief in human intelligence, which is capable of improving the performance of artificial intelligence.
Prof. Ali Al-Anwar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Conference, explained that the conference is witnessing the participation of all departments of the faculty in addition to faculties from the medical sector at the university.
He added that artificial intelligence has made a major revolution in the field of medical diagnosis and treatment, in addition to hospitals benefiting from it in reducing human errors and improving efficiency and quality of the health process, with its role in medical education by providing customized educational experiences for students, and enabling them to acquire skills and sound thinking through simulation. It also enables professors to evaluate and improve student performance, stressing the keenness of the Faculty of Medicine leaders to integrate artificial intelligence technology into the faculty curricula to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals for the digital age.
Prof. Hala Sweed, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs and Vice President of the Conference, explained that the Faculty of Medicine, at Ain Shams University, has a long history in the field of artificial intelligence that began before the Corona pandemic, and she shed light on the efforts of the Faculty of Medicine in this regard, pointing out that Ain Shams Hospital The default has been established since 2016, and there are other platforms during the Corona pandemic that provided medical services to nearly 30,000 patients, such as (Exera).
She added that Ain Shams Virtual Hospital is Egypt's representative in the World Health Organization to establish the ethics of using technology in the health service, noting that one of the latest steps of Ain Shams University in the field of artificial intelligence is the establishment of the Center of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in the health sector, which includes all faculties of the health sector in cooperation with Faculties ( Computer and Information Science, Engineering, and Science).
Prof. Mohie Al-Banna, Professor of General Surgery and Rapporteur of the Conference, confirmed that this year's conference is unusual, as it is characterized by the participation of 33 departments from the faculty, Ain Shams Medical Research Center (Egypt), and Egypt Chapter of ACS, in addition to a session chaired by Prof. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of the University, and another chaired by Prof. Ali Al-Anwar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, as well as a session chaired by the Executive Director of Hospitals, Prof. Tariq Youssef.
He added that what distinguishes this year's conference also is that it coincides with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine, at Ain Shams University, and the university's hospitals ranked No. 45, among the best 100 hospitals around the world according to the American Brand Finance AMCs classification, and the first place at the level of Egyptian hospitals.
During the opening session, Prof. Christopher Ellison, President of the American College of Surgeons, presented the Egypt chapter of the ACS Outstanding Achievement Award to Prof. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of the University, and Prof. Osama Mansour, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Graduate Studies and Research, and President of the American Faculty of Surgeons also presented the Outstanding Achievement Award to Prof. Ali Al-Anwar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hospitals, and Prof. Tariq Youssef, Executive Director of Ain Shams University Hospitals.
It is noteworthy that the conference witnessed the presentation of a short film that includes the stages of development of the conference since its inception. After the opening session, a press conference was held with the participation of the university president, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the vice president of the conference, and the conference rapporteur, during which they answered all inquiries.
