Within the framework of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research's interest in implementing the assignments of the President of the Republic to raise the ranking of Egyptian universities and research institutions in international rankings, the Ministry has been keen to encourage international scientific publishing, and to provide technical support to Egyptian universities and research institutions, thus contributing to their advancement in international rankings.
Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, said that all international rankings of universities and research centers confirmed the remarkable progress of Egyptian universities and research institutions in rankings at the international level.
The minister added that the remarkable progress witnessed by universities and research centers in the international rankings for the year 2022 was as follows:
• An increase in the number of Egyptian universities included in the "Times Higher Education Impact" classification for sustainable development for the year 2022 to 36 Egyptian universities, compared to 31 universities in 2021, 23 universities in 2020, and 16 universities in 2019, and this classification generally included universities on At the world level, to include 1406 universities from 106 countries this year compared to 1115 universities in 2021, in addition to the sustainable development goals in these fields being one of the important activities of Egyptian universities similar to international universities.
• The inclusion of 26 Egyptian universities in the "Times Higher Education" classification of global higher education institutions for the year 2023.
• The inclusion of 19 Egyptian universities in the "US NEWS" classification for the year 2022/2023, among the best 2000 universities in the world.
• An increase in the number of Egyptian universities listed in the Chinese Shanghai Classification for Academic Specializations for the year 2022 to 24 Egyptian universities, compared to the inclusion of only five universities in the year 2020.
• Launching the Spanish Simago Index (SC Imago) as a new classification for research centers in the Middle East and North Africa region for the year 2022, in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Elsevier Foundation; With the aim of creating a competitive environment to enhance the results of research issued by research centers, in addition to being a new tool in activating more cooperation between Egyptian research centers and their counterparts in the Middle East and North Africa; In a way that contributes to achieving the goals of sustainable development, the National Research Center topped the list of research centers, and three other Egyptian research centers ranked among the top ten in the Middle East and North Africa in this classification, namely: the Agricultural Research Center ranked fourth, and the Energy Authority Atomic ranked fifth, and the Petroleum Research Institute ranked seventh, and the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications ranked (11) in the Simago classification, and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology ranked (14), and the Center for Metals Research and Development ranked (17), The Electronics Research Institute ranked (37), the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research ranked (42), the Theodor Belhars Institute ranked (56) in this classification, the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries ranked (57), and the National Sensing Authority came. From distance and space sciences in the center (65).
• The Inclusion of 42 Egyptian universities in the Spanish Simago classification for the year 2022, compared to 35 universities last year, i.e. an increase of 7 universities during this year, at the level of (8084) universities and research institutions.
• The inclusion of 76 Egyptian educational and research institutions in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities for the year 2022, with an increase of 4 educational institutions compared to the results of last year's classification.
• The inclusion of 7 Egyptian universities in the Shanghai General Chinese Ranking "ARWU" for the year 2022, compared to the inclusion of 6 universities during the past year 2021.
The SC Imago global report, issued in April 2022, indicated that Egypt ranked 26th in the world in the field of international publishing for the year 2021 out of 232 countries in the top 11.2% of the list of world countries for the year 2021, compared to the 28th place in 2020.
The report stated that the total international publication of Egypt in globally indexed journals amounted to 38,651 thousand papers in 2021, compared to 31,786 papers in 2020, an increase of 21.6%.
Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, media advisor and official spokesperson for the Ministry, stated that the progress of Egyptian universities and research institutions in the various international classifications is due to several procedures that took place during the last period, the most important of which are: training in international publishing, in addition to what universities, centers, and research bodies are doing to motivate researchers of all academic degrees to publish. In prestigious international journals and the distinguished ratings enjoyed by scientific research published internationally in the work of scientific promotion committees, and the provision of information resources to researchers via the Internet, and cooperation with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank.
