A scientific trip for students of the Geography Department at the Faculty of Education

Under the auspices of Prof. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of Ain University, Prof. Abdel-Fattah Saoud, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, Prof. Hazem Rashid, Dean of the Faculty of Education, and Prof. Dr. Safaa Shehata, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs, the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems at the Faculty of Education, Ain Shams University organized a scientific trip For students of the fourth year, geography to Matrouh Governorate and the northwestern coast of Egypt, under the general supervision of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel Salam Hussein, Head of the Geography Department at the Faculty, and a supervising committee of faculty members.

The study achieved its objectives with distinction and achieved the learning outcomes by visiting the geographical phenomena until the number of sites reached fifteen locations between natural and human geographical phenomena.

The course of the field study began from the headquarters of the Faculty of Education, Ain Shams University, crossing the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, and it was stopped in Wadi al-Natrun depression (Al-Ain Al-Hamra Lake), and it was directed directly to the residence hotel in Marsa Matrouh, the village of Teba Rose - Air Defense in Matrouh, and the flight was received by the Brigadier General Ahmed Ibrahim and the village leaders.

They stopped at the olive presses, took some photographs, and interviewed the workers, in addition to explaining the different stages of olive pressing. With the study of the water tanks spread among the people of Matrouh to invest and store the rain water falling in the winter season, how the reservoir works and how to build it was explained, and a personal interview was held with a resident of the area.

The Marmarica plateau was studied through the dry valleys and descended there, and a group of phenomena related to the valley were identified, such as renewal points, waterfalls, vascular pits and other natural phenomena. Also, fig and olive farms were studied in the lower basin of one of the valleys, and the students went down to the farm and its characteristics and sources of irrigation were identified. .

Also, the phenomena of the coasts were studied near the sunken ship, and a group of phenomena specific to the coast, such as playa deposits and beach terraces, were studied.

At the end of each day of the trip, a seminar was held at the residence hotel, where the students reviewed and discussed the geographical phenomena that had been collected and seen.

A visit was also made to one of the outputs of the torrential rains, and the students went down to the valley and studied the slope of the valley’s belly towards the site of the torrent and identified the areas where the torrent water was drained.

By studying human phenomena within the city and linking them to industrial sites and economic resources, one of the marble and granite factories was visited. The engineer in charge of the factory was interviewed, where he explained the stages of processing marble and granite from the beginning to reaching the consumer.

Through the study of the coasts, an amazing beach was visited, and it was studied in a geomorphological study. The students get acquainted with a wide range of phenomena related to the geomorphology of the beaches, such as cliffs, caves, and other coastal phenomena that explain the mechanism of marine erosion and its impact on rocks and beaches. They also went to salt lakes and how to extract salt, especially in the summer. Rommel Beach was not visited and the historical events related to the place were clarified. An explanation and analysis were made of important points of the huge achievements, such as the new city of El Alamein and the Dabaa nuclear power plant.

The field study concluded with a visit to the city and a tour of its market. The students conducted a personal interview with some vendors and learned about the mechanism of the market’s work. The last seminar was held, and some outstanding and distinguished students were honored by the supervisory authority. On Wednesday, November 30, they returned safely to Cairo.

Finally, a duty thanks to the Egyptian Armed Forces, represented by the Air Defense House in Matrouh and the village of Tibaruz, for providing security and safety for our dear students, for ensuring their comfort and for their effective contribution to the implementation of the flight program.
