A symposium at the Faculty of Al-Alsun discusses legal translation... its rules and skills

The Community Service and Environmental Development Sector, at the Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University, organized a symposium entitled "Legal translation... its rules and proficiency", in cooperation with the Semitic Languages ​​Department, under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of the University, Prof. Dr. Hesham Tamraz, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof. Dr. Salwa Rashad, Dean of the Faculty, and the supervision of Prof. Dr. Youmna Safwat, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof. Dr. Eman Ramzy, head of the Semitic Languages ​​Department at the Faculty, during which he hosted Prof. Dr. Ayman Salama, Professor of International Law.

It was confirmed by Prof. Dr. Ayman Salameh that there is still confusion due to the ignorance of accurate legal terminology by non-specialized translators, stressing that there are radical differences between specialized terms.

Salameh stressed the misuse in the media of the term "delimitation of borders" instead of "setting borders" and clarified the essential difference between the two procedures.

He also mentioned the term joint administration to represent the Egyptian-British joint administration of Sudan until the first of January 1956, and it may not be translated that it was a trusteeship, mandate or dependency.

Salama explained that every translator, not just the legal translator, must be aware and study the culture and civilization of the peoples of the source and target languages.

He emphasized that translation in its broad sense is the process of conveying meaning from the source language to the target language, considering the cultural and regional differences between the two languages.

He demonstrated this with many examples from legal texts and documents of organizations, explaining the difference in the use of the terms “cease-fire” and armistice agreement, also noting the difference between the translation of “agreement”, “agreement” and “treaty” in English and the differences between them depending on the context in the sentences Legal.

He urged the students to prepare a good character and not necessarily to obtain specialized courses, but rather that those who wish to excel should prepare themselves personally in the field of specialized translation.
