To complement the campus development plan, Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, opened the new metal bridge linking the two sides of the campus, in the presence of Engineer Raafat Al-Hindi, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Infrastructure, Eng. Dr. Abdel Fattah Saoud, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ayman Saleh, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research Affairs, Prof. Dr. Hesham Tamraz, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof. Dr. Saleh Hashem, Prof. Dr. Hussein Essa, former president of Ain Shams University, Prof. Dr. Shahira Samir Director of the International Relations Sector, Prof. Dr. Yasser Megahid, Director of the Engineering Consultation Center, and a group of deans of faculties, directors of centers and technology units in various faculties of the university.
The new metal bridge is a link between the two sides of the university campus and an alternative to the old bridge that was built in the eighties of the last century, which was exposed to some accidents as a result of the small height below it, which is less than the height allowed according to the specifications. The new bridge was designed by the Engineering Consultation Center at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ain Shams, according to the highest levels of comfort and safety for users and to provide a safe height for traffic below, where the external bridge width is 7.3 meters, the internal net width for pedestrians is 6.4, the height of the internal bridge is 3.2 meters, and the height of its pure bottom from the road level is 5.7 meters, making it one of the widest pedestrian bridges in Egypt .
A comprehensive maintenance and upgrading of all the original structural elements of the bridge was carried out, including the foundations, columns and the roof of the upper bridge, as well as the use of modern auxiliary elements of metal cables temporarily based on the current bridge body to maintain the information link between the campus facilities and the Specialized Hospital during the period of replacement and renewal.
To facilitate the use of the bridge, it has been provided with 4 escalators, in addition to the presence of two screens on the bridge body from the outside for display, the first in the direction of Heliopolis and the second in the direction of Abbasiya, used for the information purposes of the university.
The bridge provides a special corridor for citizens to cross the two sides of Al Khalifa Al Mamoun Street, in addition to a separate corridor with electronic gates for Ain Shams University affiliates from students and faculty staff. It also provides the link between the university campus and the multi-storey car park to be implemented next to Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital. Movement on both sides of Caliph Al-Mamoun Road, which reduces the traffic load on Abbasiya Square.
