The success of the separation of the Burundian conjoined twins at Ain Shams University Hospitals

Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, announced the success of the operation to separate the Burundian conjoined twins, which was carried out at Demerdash University Hospital. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ashraf Omar, Dean of the College of Medicine, Chairman of the University Hospitals Board of Directors, and Prof. Ali Al-Anwar, Executive Director of University Hospitals.

Prof. Dr. Tarek Youssef, Director of Demerdash Surgical Hospital, said that the operation to separate conjoined twins was carried out free of charge, with Ain Shams University bearing all the expenses of accommodation, treatment and medical care.

The age of the conjoined twins is 1 year and 3 months, and the areas of attachment in the abdomen, thighs, and some common organs in the digestive, reproductive and urinary systems have been separated.

         
   
         

Dr. Tarek Youssef said that the preparation for the surgery took a whole year since receiving the 3-month-old twins, and in coordination with the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, contact was made with Ain Shams University Hospitals, due to the efficiency of the medical staff and their experience in the field of twin separation operations.

Prof. Tarek Youssef praised the efforts of the medical team, especially Prof. Dr. Alaa Al-Ghunaimi, a consultant paediatrics surgeon at Ain Shams University Hospitals, an Egyptian doctor who immigrated to France, and a visiting professor protocol was concluded with him and participated with the medical team in performing this successful surgery, and he was contacted directly and sent all medical reports, x-rays, etc., and it came specifically from France to participate in the surgery to separate the twins.

After several preparatory meetings, it was decided to perform the surgery and the separation process using tissue expanders technique under the supervision of the doctors of the Department of Plastic Surgery to provide enough tissues for surgery and separate each twin separately, and this was done in two consecutive operations during the past six months. Until the separation stage is reached. The full course, which lasted 16 hours, in which each medical team performed its role, starting with plastic surgery, then digestive surgery and paediatrics surgery under the supervision of Prof. Ahmed Medhat and Prof. Alaa Al-Ghunaimi, then the orthopaedic, aesthesia and intensive care team.

Youssef said that the condition of the twins is stable and they are subject to full medical care.
