A breakthrough in diagnosis of a blinding eye condition

Prof. Dr. Magd Zakaria an eminent professor of neurology at Ain Shams University has published in the Lancet a breakthrough in diagnosis of the blinding "optic neuritis". In collaboration with 100 researchers (60 countries) the most recent diagnosis criteria were laid down after a meticulous 3year process.

The Lancet, a very prestigious medical journal, just published a breakthrough in diagnosis of “optic neuritis’ as reported by 101 eminent researchers worldwide.

The condition involves inflammation of different etiologies of the optic nerve and affects patients at all ages.

Egypt is one of 60 countries contributing in laying down the most recent criteria for diagnosing the blinding condition; optic neuritis and its subtypes.

Prof. Dr. Magd Zakaria, professor of neurology at Ain Shams University, points out the importance of such work lies in the grave consequences of the disease and the fact that lack of consensus for diagnosis leads to misdiagnosis and mistreatment.

The published criteria are the result of a 3-year meticulous process that considered heterogeneity of patient clinical pictures and ethnic backgrounds.

This study is the principal guide to both physicians in diagnosis and treatment of optic neuritis and its subtypes and researchers for future trials.
