Climate change, the carbon footprint and the university’s efforts to go green...A symposium at the Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University ‎

Under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Dr. Abdel Fattah Saoud, Vice President of Education and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ayman Saleh, Vice President of Graduate Studies and Research, Prof. Dr. Ghada Farouk, Vice President of Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof. Dr.‎ Ahmed Jalal, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, Prof. Dr. Walaa Abdel Ghani, Vice Dean of Graduate Studies and Research Affairs, and Prof. Dr. Hisham Hariri, Vice Dean of Education and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Galal, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, inaugurated the symposium on climate change and the carbon footprint, noting that it comes within the efforts of Ain Shams University, headed by Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini in this field within the framework of sustainable development and Egypt's vision 2030, and comes in conjunction with Egypt's preparation to host the World Summit on Climate Change "COP 27" from 6 to 18 November in Sharm El-Sheikh.

         
   
         

During his speech, which was conducted in an interactive way with the attendees, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Galal touched on the concept of climate change and the reasons for the emergence of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, which led to the formation of a layer of gases outside and inside the atmosphere, which resulted in a rise in the temperature of the planet and the impact of these changes on the agricultural sector, such as the drying of some rivers, the increase in salinity in some areas, the change in planting dates, and then a change in the forms and patterns of plant diseases, and also animal and virus forms resulting from different temperatures.

He stressed the need to take all measures and the whole world must be united to curb this phenomenon and its consequences on all environmental, economic and social aspects, and it is necessary to reconsider and not to give priority to the economic aspect over the environment and the social aspect of the world, and pointed out the importance of the trend towards climate-smart agriculture.

During the symposium, Dr. ‎Zainab Hendy discussed the principles and pillars of sustainable development, Egypt's Vision 2030, the social, environmental and economic dimensions, and the efforts made by Ain Shams University to go green, during the symposium, she also addressed the concept of the carbon footprint, how to calculate it and its importance, what is the Conference of the Parties, what is its importance, and the practices that can mitigate global warming, such as rationalizing the use of energy and fuel.
