A team from the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, Department of Mechanical Engineering, representing Ain Shams University, participated in the competition ASHRAE that is held every year among many international universities.
The team specifically participated in the ASHRAE HVAC SYSTEM SELECTION competition, which requires several goals, including the use of renewable energy to reduce harmful emissions resulting from the use of fossil fuels, achieving the concept of "low energy building or zero energy building", in addition to achieving the principle of sustainability with the lowest price during operation for 50 years.
The Ain Shams engineering team designed and selected three refrigeration and air conditioning systems for an educational building in Sydney, Australia, to choose the most efficient among them. ABSORPTION CHILLER for the third "AIR COOLED CHILLER". In order to achieve the requirement of renewable energy, solar energy and biomass were used to supply the three systems with energy. The first system works with 55% of solar energy, the second works with 91% of solar energy and biofuels, and the third works with 61% of solar energy.
By achieving all of the above, the building is expected to achieve a "Platinum" rating according to the US Green Building Council's LEED "LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN" classification.
The team ranked first at the local levels “Egypt” and the regional “Africa and Asia” and third place at the global level, outperforming a number of American universities, and the ranking was as follows:
First Place: Pennsylvania State University
Second Place: University of Nebraska - Lincoln
Third Place: Ain Shams University
Rising Star: Texas A&M University
A representative of the team will travel to Atlanta, USA from February 4-8, 2023 to represent the college and receive the awards.
He supervised the students:
